New 80s Style Film Poster Illustration and Time-lapse Video
I had a challenging, but rewarding time creating a poster illustration with an 80s vibe. It will be the advertising feature for soon-to-be released short film, “The Blue Pendant”.
You can get an overview of my process from my time-lapse video. You can also see how some things just don’t land the first time I lay down a drawing (watch me redraw/repaint the sinister eyeballs 3 times).
This time-lapse was made possible by my new, beautiful iMac computer. So sleek. Much shiny.
New Timelapse: Snow Study Digital Painting
This is an exploration of form, light, and color with a great reference inspiration: snow! This time I used just one brush in Photoshop, which is the basic gouache brush from Kyle Webster's gouache brush pack. I use this brush along with basic round brushes for most of my work!
Timelapse Digital Painting: Poinsettia Elf
Here to spread some Christmas cheer is my Poinsettia elf. She was drawn and painted in Photoshop using the basic round brush and my favorite Gouache brush from a Kyle Webster brush pack.
Some of the notable tools used:
Symmetry Tool: Used to establish the face drawing and initial passes of painting
Liquify Tool: Great for adjusting proportions of the figure and making the edges of the leaves more wavy
Smudge tool: Sometimes used to blur edges, but also to push things a bit, like the liquify tool
Adjustment Layer: Gradient Map: Used to establish base layer for color
Mixer Brush: Used to blend harsh brush strokes
New Painting Timelapse Video
Painting on a small scale opens up many creative possibilities! Even though matt board is not considered among the common surfaces for watercolor, it lends itself well for the task. Because I am working delicately with small-scale wet gradients, I don't have to worry about the board warping or fraying. Here is a tiny painting I made to illustrate a new character design: the Succulent Princess!
Painting is available on my Etsy store along with my other miniature artworks.
